Located west of the hundredth meridian in the rain shadow of The Rocky Mountains, the front range of Colorado receives an average of only thirteen to eighteen inches of precipitation per year.  With continuing growth in population, agriculture and industry, the natural semi-arid (desert) ecology of the region has come under increasing strain.  To address the crucial need for conservation, The Colorado Chautauqua Association Waterwise Garden (s) seeks to educate the public about xeriscape principles and to demonstrate indigenous and introduced water wise plants while enhancing the natural beauty of the park.”
We have attempted to “rehabilitate the existing gardens in the area with water wise plant material reflecting the original 1993 planting intentions” as designed by Robert Howard and Associates.

The original intent of the Waterwise Garden as designed by Robert Howard and Associates dedicated on July 17, 1993 was threefold: 1. Enhancement 2. Water Conservation and 3. Educational.

About the Speaker:
Jeffrey Rump is the Staff Horticulturist for the Colorado Chautauqua Association.  He has been designing and caring for gardens since his graduation from Colorado State University in 1983.
