2021 Season Piece Descriptions:

Airs is a masterpiece choreographed in 1978 by modern dance pioneer Paul Taylor. Rooted in classical ballet, wind and water are personified in dancer's movements and their special patterns. The contrast between smooth and slow adage, and the quick, precise footwork of a gigue mimic the aggression of a blustery day and a soft morning breeze. This uplifting work is historically significant to the world of dance and is sure to lift spirits.

The American pas de deux is a dance for two, choreographed by world-renowned choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. Featuring intricate partnering and impressive lifts, this neoclassical piece is smoothly reminiscent of a summer evening.

Continuing Christopher Wheeldon’s trademark partnering, Je Ne T'aime Pas tells the story of two dancers as they struggle in relationships. The movements are harsh and juxtaposed; they fight as they dance, yet meld with poignant connection. Both in the dance and the operatic score, the message is clear: Je ne t'aime pas; I will never love you.

Boulder Ballet presents the company premier of esteemed choreographer Amy Seiwert’s The Devil Ties My Tongue. The contemporary ballet explores the complexity of communication, human connections, and deep internal conflicts. Inspired by Leonard Cohen’s poem, S.O.S, Seiwert’s work features intricate partnering and detailed gestures that convey Cohen’s powerful words: “Take a long time with your anger, sleepy head/ Don’t waste it in riots/ Don’t tangle it with ideas/ The Devil won’t let me speak.”
